Parents need to know that Write My Name is a content-packed app that teaches kids how to write lower- and uppercase manuscript letters and 112 preloaded sight words. It aligns with Kindergarten and Grade 1 English Common Core State Standards. It's especially helpful for kids with dysgraphia, who might have trouble with written language processing, fine motor growth, letter reversal errors, visual/spatial issues, and spelling. The app provides audio and visual cues to writers and teaches using the top-down method for forming letters (beginning every letter from the top and working down). Parents can customize by adding names of people or places for writers to trace. When practicing sight words, kids can capture an image of their completed word card to show their progress. Write My Name will not reinforce fluid letter writing, since you can stop mid-letter and begin again where you left off (instead of going back to the beginning of the fluid stroke).What kids can learn
Each task includes bright and charming animation to accompany each letter or word. Parents or kids can also add specific words to practice, which can include an image and/or voice recording to make it more personal.
Kids write using the top-down method and can see their results when Fingerpaint Mode is enabled. With certain letters (C, S, Q, P, and O), writers can finger paint off the stencil and create a final word that looks messy and inaccurate.
There is a lengthy guide provided with this app (accessed through the settings gear). Each activity is self explanatory; sound effects help guide writers to create letters correctly. Kids cannot move on with letters until they are completed.
What's it about?
With WRITE MY NAME kids practice lower- and uppercase letter formation by following an arrow and audio cues. Once finished, a simple animation reinforces the letter or word traced. Writers can capture their work on the photo roll and can see how many words or letters they've completed. There are 112 preloaded sight words that a kid can trace in all uppercase or all lowercase letters. A voice says each letter and word as a kid completes them. Parents and kids can add their own words along with picture or audio clues.
Is it any good?
Its title is misleading, as Write My Name goes beyond name recognition, and kids write individual letters and words. The graphics are simple yet engaging, the preloaded sight words keep writers engaged, and the personalization of adding their own words may entice kids to use it more than other handwriting apps. For kids with fine motor delays, however, this app may not reinforce fluid writing skills as letters can be stopped and started mid-stroke. The Fingerpaint Mode can also produce some messy, incorrect results.
