Like a lot of social focused apps, Word Dance is going to be pretty dependent on the area you live in. If you’re in a bustling hive of activity where everyone's keen to try new apps, Word Dance should be pretty successful. Live in a sleepy suburb? Probably not so much.
Essentially, you're submitting one word reviews for nearby places. Rather than going through the hassle of providing longer information or having to rate things out of 5, you simply enter one word and submit it. Then other users can approve/agree with it by touching it to make it 'grow' in size and stature.
You don't even have to sign up if you don't want to, although this does expand upon how many times you can submit words or up vote others. It's a simple idea and one that could work quite well if enough people give it a go. Often, you can say a lot with one word without needing to waffle on to fit an arbitrary character requirement. Curiously though, the words never actually dance so don't expect entertaining graphics.
There's no indication as to how Word Dance retrieves the information of nearby places. For instance, although being near a gym and an educational institution at the time, the app didn't pick up that I was near them – leaving me able to rate the town and road instead. Being able to provide your own geographical locations could have helped here, or being able to view a graphic of the surrounding area.
Still, as a neat idea, Word Dance has potential. It's free, quick to use, and easy set up – if not entirely accurate. Most importantly, it's more appealing to those with limited time who’d rather not delve into the weightiness of Yelp et al.
