What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Disney Movies Anywhere lets families access movies purchased on iTunes, Google Play, or VUDU on any device. Parents will have to create an account with Disney, giving their email address and other personal information and then grant permission for the app to access their various accounts. Their email address will be used for lots of email marketing (but you can opt out if desired). All movies must be purchased; some previews and featured shorts are free. Kids will be able to browse all of the available titles, not just those they own and have access to. Parents can set up parental controls in the settings to restrict R, PG-13, or PG movies. DISNEY'S MOVIES ANYWHERE walks you through the set-up process, step-by-step, from creating an account to linking other accounts so that all your purchased Disney films will be housed in the app. Disney or Marvel movies previously purchased will then automatically show up in "My Collection," the center and largest button on the bottom control bar. Also accessible on the bar: featured movies, movies browsable by category, extra features and trailers to discover for free, and rewards where families can collect codes from purchased Disney DVDs and products.
Is it any good?
Families with multiple platforms for devices will appreciate being able to watch movies on the go, regardless of their device or which app store they purchased the movie from. Of course, only Disney franchises are available, though that's a pretty extensive collection for kids. The home page interface features all movies, not just those already owned, which may be confusing for kids who want to just click and watch -- especially kids used to navigating Netflix on their own and streaming shows from the KIDS section. The option to stream movies or download them to the device make is even handier -- especially for travel. While parents can set ratings restrictions, there's no control to limit screen time.
