Sago Mini Road Trip

Sago Mini Road Trip gallery

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Sago Mini Road Trip features the familiar animal friends from other Sago Mini apps as Jinga the cat prepares for a road trip. Kids get to choose which friend Jinga goes to visit or a particular destination. Everything is preschool-friendly, requiring no reading and imposing no time limits or set rules. Still, there's a set order for each step of the trip for kids to complete. If kids need hints, objects jiggle to prompt them to touch. Once kids start a trip, they have to finish it or restart the app.

What kids can learn

Engagement

Driving along a scenic road, dodging or hitting obstacles is certainly fun, but driving a pickle to the car wash or cruising down the road in a bubble bath is totally hilarious preschool fun.

Learning Approach

Kids are empowered to make choices at every phase of play -- choosing their destination, what to pack, and which vehicle to drive. The unconventional choices inspire imagination.

Support

No reading skills are required and play is pretty intuitive. Hints prompt kids where to tap after delays in play.

What's it about?

Just as they would on any road trip, kids start by choosing their destination -- the mountains, Egyptian pyramids, or a tropical beach. They may choose their destination based on which animal friend is there, too, as each destination is accompanied by a different Sago Mini animal. Then they pack their suitcase, choose their car, and start on their way. They can stop and wash the car or gas up, and they may encounter some non-threatening obstacles along the way. The mile markers count down from ten until they reach their destination, greet their friend, and take a vacation photo.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Once again, Sago Sago has created a silly, fun, toddler- and preschooler-friendly play experience. Kids get to have some control over an experience that can often leave them feeling pretty out of control -- being stuck in a car seat for a long road trip. On a Sago Mini Road Trip, though, kids get to choose where they're going, what to pack, and what car to drive to get there -- from bathtubs to pickles and all kinds of more traditional (and not-so-traditional) vehicles. The one possible frustration is that kids can't stop the trip once they've started without restarting the app. While that's totally realistic, kids may want to change their car or destination mid-trip and won't be able to do that.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the similarities in the app and their own road-trip preparations, like packing, gassing up, and washing the car. When packing, what else does the cat pack besides clothes?

  • The cat travels to several fun places on road trips. Ask kids where they'd like to go on a road trip.
