Duckie Deck Bird Houses Review

Toddlers and preschool-aged children will be delighted to try the new app, Duckie Deck Bird Houses, which allows them to explore this helpful craft. From first glimpse, adults will marvel at the use of the depth of field that this app has to offer as a lush green and mildly interactive landscape can be seen in the distance while one chooses a tree to build a birdhouse for.

I am fond of the look of all of the tree selections as they are various shades of brown and grey – wonderful representations of real trees that most people have come across, complete with distinguishing features such as maple leaves, apples, or acorns. They are all very nice choices that will jog the memories that children have of trees from their adventures in nature. Also of note is the well-crafted background music used throughout – upbeat and a little quirky, which adds to the overall experience for both children and adults.

After selecting a tree, one will then be given a choice in basic birdhouse shape as well as a chance to choose from some very interesting colorful textures for the body and roof of the birdhouse that replicate objects children will be familiar with – such as rustic wood choices, distressed cardboard, faded blue denim, red and white checked material, classic lined notebook paper, or a red brick pattern. After making a selection, one can use paint to add some bright details of their choosing. I appreciate the subtle details that have been included, such as the fine mist of spray color that one has a chance to control, allowing children to add sheer colors to their birdhouses without totally covering their previous stylistic choices in opaque paint. Another smart detail is the inclusion of a sponge to be used to remove any painting errors, implying the use of water-base paint that I am fond of.

Once the colors have been added, one will then get a chance to further accessorize their house with a wide variety of fun, homey details such as flowers, a bell, chimney, or telescope. Next, watch as the completed house becomes occupied by the pink bird who has walked users through each of these steps – a lovely conclusion to this application.

Duckie Deck Bird Houses is a short and sweet process app that children will enjoy working with again and again. My son, going on seven, may be a little outside the key age range of this app but he still quite enjoyed choosing all the elements of his birdhouse, carefully scrolling through each of his trees, template, texture paint, and ornament choices to build just the right home. I can see this app getting children interested in building their own functioning birdhouses as well – quite helpful to birds looking for winter refuge.
