Hotel Transylvania 2 Official Storybook App

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hotel Transylvania 2 Official Storybook App is a tie-in with the PG-rated movie. The book features still images from the movie as well as voices reading some lines. The plot includes some peril for 5-year-old Dennis, the half-human, half-vampire protagonist, including being thrown from a tower by his grandfather (who does end up saving him) and being captured by the bad vampire, Bela, who believes humans and vampires shouldn't mix. In the end, Bela is dispatched and Dennis finds acceptance from both his monster and human families, learning that he "was always cool."

What kids can learn

Engagement

Illustrations are screenshots directly from the movie, and the professional narration includes the same voices. The shortened length is just right for kids' attention spans.

Learning Approach

Though it's not as interactive as some storybook apps, kids will reap the reading benefits, either reading silently or listening along.

Support

Kids can tap specific words to hear them read aloud. Colored pages are saved in the coloring book until they're erased.

What's it about?

Read along in HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 OFFICIAL STORYBOOK APP as the story is read aloud, swiping to move to the next page and tapping words to hear them repeated. From within the book, kids can turn audio on or off and see an overview of all the pages. The story follows the plot of the movie: Five-year-old Dennis is half-human, half-vampire, and his parents don't yet know if he'll develop vampire traits or not. His grandfather and great-grandfather are impatient and try to scare fangs out of him. The story illustrations are scenes from the movie, and kids can color pages of the characters in the in-app coloring book.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Though still packed with thrills and chills, this storybook adaption of the PG-rated movie gives younger fans an approachable intro to the big screen. The straight-from-the-movie voices and scenes are fantastically eerie. The monsters -- even the adults with poor decision-making skills -- are somehow lovable, except for the evil Bela. Though the messages are mostly positive, the grown-ups' choices and the ending may feel muddled to little kids who may take things more literally. Navigating the story is simple, and kids can easily switch from read-aloud to silent, without having to leave the page. For kids reading on their own, single words can be read aloud with only a tap. Being able to control the story and sound and knowing things work out in the end either will serve as a bridge to the movie or just make the ebook more fun on its own.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how everyone is unique and loved, even if parents or grandparents sometimes have a hard time showing it.

  • Families planning to see the movie with younger kids may want to preview the book app before watching the movie so kids know it ends well and to help kids cope with the scarier parts of the movie.
