What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Shadow Puppet Edu is a slide-show creation tool designed to help kids create presentations. All of the resources they might want to include are included and accessible from within the app, like images from museums, Flikr, and their own camera roll. The image searches are well-filtered to keep them appropriate, but the system could potentially still let some objectionable material through. Kids can also share their creations by email or message as well as through apps connected on the device, like YouTube and Twitter. What kids can learn
Creating an original movie slide show is easy and really fun.
Kids are empowered to be creative, with easy access to resources and inspiration. They can create slideshows on a variety of topics.
A video tutorial walks kids through the creation process, which is pretty intuitive anyway. Loads of resources are included in-app with even more available online.
What's it about?
Create video slideshows, adding narration and text. Videos can be up to 30 minutes long and can include up to 100 images. Kids can choose images from the camera roll, The Library of Congress, maps, the MOMA The British Library, NASA, and NOAA, as well as from Flikr and web searches within the app. They then scroll through and zoom in on images as they narrate their slide show, and they can add text or clip art. Videos automatically saved to the device's camera roll and online, accessible via a direct link, and can be shared through social media.
Is it any good?
SHADOW PUPPETS EDU is chock-full of resources, all in-app, so kids can quickly and easily create impressive slideshows. It's intended for educational use and also includes resources galore for teachers. And while kids are searching resources that could include objectionable content, the filters are locked-down pretty well. (Trial searches for potentially racy content all pulled up pictures of bunnies, which is a cute gotcha.) The only weakness is the parent-lock passcode before sharing, which requires holding a button for a few seconds: Any kid who can read will bypass that very easily.
