What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Choiceworks Calendar provides a visual learning tool that helps kids better understand and organize their time. With an easy-to-use interface that provides 750 preloaded images and audio descriptions of activities that can be repeated from day to day, Choiceworks Calendar can count down days toward a special event or keep track of activities that should occur every day, like eating breakfast, brushing teeth, or going to school. It was created to help kids with a higher level of anxiety toward transition and may be especially useful for kids with executive function issues such as attention deficits or inflexible/rigid thinking. What kids can learn
Parents and kids can select from 275 preloaded images (with audio) that represent common activities. Kids can also upload their own images and activities to better customize calendars, especially for more specific events. Many kids will enjoy taking control of their schedules and having a visual map.
Choiceworks Calendar can help kids take responsibility for their daily, weekly, or monthly activities and help ease transitions between daily events for kids who show anxiety surrounding schedule changes. It can also help countdown to days or special events.
Support is provided at every step including user set-up, choosing activities or events, completing the activity, and sharing calendars with others.
What's it about?
When opening CHOICEWORKS CALENDAR, you are prompted to set up a new user. Support and how-to tools open as each screen advances and then disappear as kids get used to entering activities into their personal calendars. Kids can view their calendar in day, week, or month mode, and can press the + symbol on any screen to add a new activity. With a tap on a picture, a voice describes each activity. On the next screen, you can select the appropriate date, time, duration, and repetition. When you're looking at a kid's schedule, you can choose to share a PDF version.
Is it any good?
Choiceworks Calendar is a great assistive technology tool that may alleviate the anxiety some kids associate with schedule changes. It also allows kids to take responsibility for their daily, weekly, and monthly activities. Choiceworks Calendar provides easy to use features, simple yet engaging graphics, and the perfect amount of user support to help kids overcome executive functioning and attention deficits.
Families can talk about...
-
Families can talk about what events will happen during a kid's typical day. Together, parents and kids should create individual schedules to prepare each other for what to expect each day. How long should each activity take? After trying out the time limits, what needs to be adjusted?
-
Plan trips or events with enough time to prepare kids who may need extra support with the change in daily routine. What will change about the daily routine? What will stay the same?
-
Families can break down long projects into smaller, more manageable steps. For instance, if kids need to clean their room, parents could help them create three or four smaller activities: pick up laundry, make bed, hang up clothes, and vacuum.
