What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Noggin is a subscription video streaming service for preschoolers that features shows from the former Noggin channel from Nickelodeon. The monthly subscription is tied to the iTunes account of the subscriber and is accessible on any device tied to that account but not family-sharing. Streaming can be restricted to Wi-Fi only in the parent settings, and closed captioning is available within the shows. All of the content is totally preschool friendly; Robot and Monster is the only content that might raise eyebrows since it has some cartoon violence and a busty female character who is the main attraction for the other characters. What kids can learn
Choosing the show and episode they watch is engaging and empowering for kids, and several kid-favorites are included in the line-up.
Though the programming is high-quality educational shows for kids, they learning approach is very passive. Exactly what kids learn varies by show.
Closed captioning is available for the shows. Parents can find help for some questions in the FAQ in the parent section.
What's it about?
Kids can stream episodes of shows from the former NOGGIN network with a monthly subscription via the app. Shows include Little Bear, Franklin and Friends, Pocoyo, Robot and Monster, and more with dozens of episodes and multiple seasons of each show. The music section includes dozens of music videos from several shows, including Yo Gabba Gabba and The Fresh Beat Band. When kids finish a show, the next episode begins automatically, unless parents opt in settings to automatically replay episodes.
Is it any good?
Navigation is totally preschool-friendly, with an easy spinning wheel of shows for kids to choose from and large icons for each episode. Extensive content is included with multiple seasons of some shows and new content promised to be added weekly. It is missing some of the parental controls that other kid streaming apps include, like setting screen-time limits or restricting some programs. Noggin may also be the only place to find some classic Nickelodeon favorites like Blue's Clues and Ni Hao Kai-Lan.
