What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Kidioms introduces kids to idioms in a vocabulary format where they learn the phrase and its meaning and then play simple games. Idioms can be especially challenging for kids on the autism spectrum and for English language learners, so Kidioms can help them learn these turns of phrase. The activities are aligned with Common Core Standards.

What kids can learn

Engagement

No-frills introduction to idioms presents the phrases in black-and-white notebook and checks for understanding through quizzes. Limited interactive elements.

Learning Approach

Phrases are explained in plain language with visual reinforcement, and kids can practice their new language skills with the games.

Support

Kids will see scores on two of the games, but long-term data and progress is not tracked.

What's it about?

KIDIOMS introduces kids to the world of figurative language used in everyday conversation. Common idioms are presented in a notebook style, giving the meaning, an example, and a picture. Kids play three interactive games to reinforce the idiom they are learning. In Word Drop, kids choose the word to complete the idiom. In Missing Word, they spell a missing word, and in Match-Up, kids use an idiom in context. Data is shown for each game played except for Word Drop.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Kidioms offers a clean interface and easy delivery of information -- definitions and quizzes -- though it's a bit outdated in terms of functionality and interactivity. It would be nice to have the option to hear the idiom or have the text read aloud, especially for kids learning English or with reading struggles. More options to interact with the idioms, beyond what could happen with a worksheet, would deepen the experience.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about idioms they commonly use, like "curiosity killed the cat" or "feeling under the weather."

  • When using new or unfamiliar idioms, double check with kids to make sure they understand your point.
