I've struggled to figure out the point behind LuckyPop – and as I say that as someone who finds a perverse satisfaction from various tapping games. LuckyPop really does feel like a game that's a game just for the sake of it, though.
The idea is that you try to collect many, many different cards from your friends, each depicting a creature such as a dragon or magic kitten. Objects can be collected too but, really, each card could just be numbered and it'd be the same experience. You collect these cards by tapping on the screen, collecting money before using that money to exchange gifts with friends. This is done through Facebook, but you can also get random people involved rather than pester your friends. That's pretty much all there is to the basics of LuckyPop.
As you hand out more gifts, you level-up and unlock new gifts to hand out, with the chance of rare gifts becoming possible assuming you exchange enough presents. Ultimately though, there's not a huge amount of point to it. LuckyPop tries to excite you by constantly telling you how many more gift points away from the next level-up you are, or how many cards you've collected. It's still kind of pointless, though. Also, there are so many cards to collect that you're going to be here for a long, long time – and for little profit.
I guess it's trying to tap into the fact that we all love to collect stuff but you never feel any great attachment to what can be found in LuckyPop. Instead, it's busywork without much soul. Occasionally you'll have to tap on an item quickly to retrieve some extra income but that's about it as far as typical gaming elements go. Otherwise, it’s all rather pointless.
