The LEGO Movie Video Game

The LEGO Movie Video Game gallery

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The LEGO Movie Video Game is more than a typical app. It's bigger -- requiring well over a full gigabyte of space -- and pricier: It's a paid app that also includes in-app purchases. But it's innovative, too, bringing the adventure game play and graphics of the console version to mobile devices. Play includes some Lego-style cartoon violence, with fights that break the Lego characters apart. Movie clips include the word "butt."

What kids can learn

Engagement

Favorite characters and lots of action will engage and excite kids. The game plot follows the movie plot, incorporating movie clips with plenty of humor.

Learning Approach

Kids follow instructions in the game, but they're left with choices in how to complete each mission. They'll use logic first and then trial and error to work through challenges. They'll also need to think critically to complete the missions.

Support

An on-screen hand prompts kids how to move, and pop-up text reminds them of each character's special abilities. Levels can be replayed to improve score.

What's it about?

THE LEGO MOVIE VIDEO GAME follows the plot and characters of the movie in a mission-based adventure game. Kids play as Emmett, Vitruvious, and Wyldstyle, destroying villains and objects and collecting the broken studs as they work to complete objectives that earn points and unlock other levels. Additional characters can be unlocked using gold bricks and Lego studs, but the gold bricks must be purchased with real money. Options include playing with the touch screen or using game-style on-screen controls.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Compared to the price of the console video game, the app version is quite a bargain -- as long as you have a device that has the required 1160MB storage space. Even buying a large bundle of gold bricks to unlock all of the characters would still cost only a fraction of the console game price. The graphics and sound effects are high quality, and playing is addictively fun. Clear on-screen instructions walk players through the controls and each characters' special abilities, and hints prompt as needed, so new players can figure it out. There's quite a bit of content, too, for hours of play. Really, the sticker shock compared to other apps is the only downside.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how The LEGO Movie Video Game compares to the movie -- or how the app compares to the console game, for kids who have played both. Which do you prefer? Why?

  • Talk to kids about your guidelines for in-app purchases before they play. Are they allowed? If so, will they need to pay for them themselves?
