Top Tank is a fairly simple game about blowing stuff up and surviving as long as possible. It could do with some more depth, even just in terms of new unlockable content, but what's here is entertaining enough to warrant the $0.99 asking price.
There's no story to speak of – just accept that enemies are out to get you and you need to wipe them out first. Your tank moves automatically, with your input coming through the manipulation of its weapon. Hold a finger down on the fire button and you can aim at your foes. It also stops your tank during the time you're lining up a shot, which comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.
Lining up the trajectory is where Top Tank offers some challenge as it can be tricky. With enemies (as well as yourself) constantly moving forward, you need to adjust quickly in order to get a direct hit. This ensures it's satisfying stuff though, and bonus points are gained for multiple direct hits. Also there's a secondary fire button, which is acquired through picking up collectibles. These offer up things like triple fire or a power shot that can take out a much more powerful tank in one blow.
It's fairly simple stuff, but Top Tank is pretty fun nonetheless. Besides a selection of achievements to work towards, you can unlock new backgrounds that provide you with extra reason to keep playing, although it won't take you long to do so. Some other form of unlockable would have been appreciated here, but what's there is enough to feel worth the price.
Top Tank won't blow your mind with innovation, but what is there is a pretty entertaining blast to the past. It's a suitably fun way to garner some stress relief in a short space of time.
