“If it ain't broke, don't fix it” seems to be the thinking behind Kingdom Rush Origins HD. Fortunately, for any Kingdom Rush title, that's a fair assumption to make. Kingdom Rush Origins HD is more of the same, for the most part, and that's an excellent thing.
With slightly more of a focus on fantasy than before, Kingdom Rush Origins HD offers up new towers, heroes, and upgrades, but is mostly just what you'd expect from the series – some tricky but well-balanced tower defense. You'll be placing turrets in useful positions, attempting to devise choke points to thwart your enemy, and upgrading things as and when the coins come in.
Once more you can control the heroes directly, each now offering their own special spell that can be triggered at an appropriate moment. You'll find yourself depending on them more than before too, as they really can make the difference in battle. A variety of upgrade options mean you can adapt your turrets to your needs, with each offering a choice of different paths to take the further you progress.
Unlike many other tower defense games, Kingdom Rush Origins HD isn't one for letting you sit back and watch as your plan unfolds, with enemies able to switch directions and mess things up quite easily. While it can be tricky, it's never less than satisfying and is really quite well paced and balanced. The ability to upgrade your hero and turrets further gives you reason to keep coming back for more.
Kingdom Rush Origins HD doesn't need to re-invent the wheel, so it doesn't even try. Instead, it's solidly dependable and sure to entice fans of the gene and earlier installments of the series.
