Chrome OS is finally getting its own dark mode – here’s how to try it out
It seems Chrome OS is finally jumping on the dark mode train. While the feature has yet to join Google’s operating system officially, you can actually test it out now. Here’s how.
Dark mode allows you to browse and navigate your laptop without straining your eyes. It’s a popular setting that is especially appreciated at night, though many simply prefer the aesthetic of a dark background.
The feature has become somewhat of a trend over the last couple of years. Many apps and operating systems already have dark modes, including MacOS and Windows and well as the iOS and Android mobile operating systems, which is why we’re surprised it’s taken Google so long to implement the feature for its Chrome OS.

Android Police spotted the new dark mode in Google’s developer’s build, Chrome Canary. Canary is where Google tests out all of its latest and greatest Chrome OS features, making it pretty unstable.
How to switch on dark mode in Chrome OS:
Luckily, you don’t need to install Canary to be the first to try Google’s new dark mode.
All you need to do is open Chrome on your Chromebook and enter “chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark” into the search bar. Enable the flag and then repeat this action for “chrome://flags/#enable-webui-dark-mode”.
Android Police also recommends enabling “chrome://flags/#dark-light-mode” to make the OS even darker.

The Chrome OS dark mode turns backgrounds to a near black colour, as opposed to the dark blue or grey some apps choose. The feature is still in testing meaning that some aspects, such as the title bars, are still white and some parts of the UI have yet to be transformed. We’ll have to wait and see whether Google makes these changes in the final build.
