Twelve a Dozen

Twelve a Dozen gallery

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Twelve a Dozen is an innovative, arcade-style game in which kids travel through a futuristic town while solving math puzzles. Kids use game controls to move young heroine Twelve through the obstacle-filled town of Dozenopolis so she can save her family. By using mathematical operations to make numbers, kids unlock powers that help them solve problems and overcome challenges.

What kids can learn

Engagement

It's wonderfully compelling to save Dozenopolis; the game is fun, fully engaging, and hard to put down.?

Learning Approach

Learning is seamlessly integrated with gameplay, and the challenges become increasingly difficult as kids complete each level.

Support

Kids can access hints as they play, although some are vague. The developer's website has an introductory video about the game and an up-to-date community blog.

What's it about?

A friendly, charming narrator (who is cleverly named "Dot" -- as in a decimal point) guides kids through the game, which starts with a brief story about the destruction of Dozenopolis. Kids are introduced to the main character, Twelve. Through 30 levels that increase in difficulty, kids help Twelve travel across the town so she can save her family. Along the way, they'll overcome lots of math-related challenges. For example, in the first level, kids have to add 1 to 12 to make 13. This unlocks a power so Twelve can pass through an obstacle. As kids complete each level, they unlock the next and get closer to helping Twelve and her family. Levels go by operation, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

12 A DOZEN is a rare gem that offers kids an opportunity to truly learn through gameplay. The story and characters are unique, the puzzles are fun and challenging, and Twelve's world is beautifully rendered. Kids will be entranced by the world of Dozenopolis -- the experience is so intriguing that it's downright addictive. With over two dozen levels of fun-filled adventure, kids likely will be so engaged that they won't even realize they're learning math.

  • Families can talk about how math is built into the game. What strategies can kids use to solve the puzzles?

  • Have kids create some of their own puzzles. How do you create new numbers using math operations?
