Spotify's new app stops kids listening to naughty music

Spotify’s new app has handpicked playlists and no ads – but it probably isn’t for you

Spotify’s new app stops kids listening to naughty music

Spotify this week announced the launch of Spotify Kids, a streaming app aimed at music-lovers aged three and up.

Spotify Kids is a colourful app filled with custom playlists designed for kids. Music and stories are handpicked by Spotify editors to filter out explicit content and make sure they are appropriate for younger listeners.

There are two settings for parents to pick from: ‘Audio for Younger Kids’ and ‘Audio for Older Kids’.

The former is packed with singalongs, lullabies and soundtracks, while the latter also features hits from popular artists that resonate well with kids in the UK.

At launch, the playlists will span a wide range of content, including movies and TV shows, top hits, activities (play time, party time, bedtime and homework), genres, seasonal, Spotify Originals, artists/groups and stories.

And, because Spotify Kids is a premium subscription, there are no ads. Kids can also listen offline with iOS devices, though we’d expect this feature to roll out for Android soon.

The interface is bright and easy to navigate. Spotify Kids is a “personalized world bursting with sound, shape and color, where our young listeners can begin a lifelong love of music and stories”, according to Spotify chief premium business officer Alex Norström.

The app launched yesterday to celebrate Childnet International’s Safer Internet Day. While this initial release is only a beta, Spotify plans to take on feedback from parents and experts to gradually improve the service over time.

Spotify Kids is available now, exclusively to Spotify Premium Family subscribers. Spotify Premium Family costs £14.99 a month and is can be used by up to six users at home and out and about as long as they are living under the same roof.

If this is your first time using Premium, you can try it and Spotify Kids free for three months.
