Instagram invites you to unfollow people you don’t care about

Instagram is going out of its way to tell you who to unfollow, in an effort to keep your feed free of those folks you never interact with and probably don’t even like that much.

The image-based social network has added a new “least interacted with” tab within the Following section of the profile page. So, if that person you’re following for reasons you cannot fathom is cluttering up your Stories, you now have quick access to ridding them from your feed.

Likewise, if you feel like someone is posting too much in relation to how much you want to see their posts, you may want to make use of the new “most seen in feed.” Both tabs offer quick access to the Following/Unfollow button if you decide to start culling.

“Want to see which Instagram accounts show up in your feed the most and who you interact with the least? Now you can! Just tap “Following” and manage your list from there,” Instagram said in a tweet. In an interesting follow-up statement, Instagram said it was about prioritising the things you care about.

“Instagram is really about bringing you closer to the people and things you care about – but we know that over time, your interests and relationships can evolve and change” a spokesperson revealed to TechCrunch on Thursday.

“Whether you graduate, move to a new city, or become obsessed with a new interest and find a community, we want to make it easier to manage the accounts you follow on Instagram so that they best represent your current connections and interests.”

Of course, Instagram has motives of its own, rather than just encouraging users to trim the fat. It wants engagement and if it can serve more ads by keeping everyone engaged for a little longer, then it’s beneficial. Anyway, RIP the people you sacrifice from your Following list today. They are with the angels now.
