Base Busters Review

Base Busters is a pretty interesting game. It turns quite flawed and a little too slow to progress later on, but there's certainly potential thanks to its mixture of conventional Tower Defense and reverse Tower Defense.

On the one hand you'll be pursuing a campaign mode that pits you against various tank forces, while on the other hand you'll be defending your headquarters from attack by other real players. The former involves your tank army traveling automatically through each level, with you able to control what they fire at. Firing itself is automatic, but you can tap on an enemy to target that one specifically. You can also activate special weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, or opt to use a shield instead to protect you from attack.

At times you'll wish you could speed up your convoy, but otherwise Base Busters's campaign mode is quite fun. It's in bite sized chunks, lending itself well to mobile gaming. After each level you can opt to help boost your current tanks or create more via an evolution feature. It's a little like a collectible card game in this respect, and just as easy to figure out.

Elsewhere, you can raid other players for fun and profit and they can do the same to you. That's why you need to keep your HQ well defended, as well as focus on your offensive capabilities. There's a lot to do here and it's also where Base Busters's freemium limitations shine through.

Everything is dependent on a series of currencies, with some easily gained via playing the game but others making you feel as if you need to spend some real money, too. You don't, of course, but impatience dictates that you're going to be tempted. There's an energy system too, slowing down what you can accomplish during each session.

As is often the way with such games, patience means that you can still enjoy Base Busters, but it's something to bear in mind. It's a neat combination of popular game types, but expect progression to slow down rapidly after a time.
