The Land of Venn - Numeric Storms

The Land of Venn - Numeric Storms gallery

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Land of Venn - Numeric Storms is a highly addictive game that reinforces basic addition facts for young learners. As in the first app, the Land of Venn is being invaded, only this time kids have to make sums by connecting numbers to ward off the monsters. The game is extremely fast-paced -- which helps kids build fact fluency -- and will slow down if kids continue to lose, but be prepared to offer encouragement if they have to replay levels several times.

What kids can learn

Engagement

The art and narration are delightfully silly, and the mission will keep kids playing.

Learning Approach

Kids learn and practice addition through a story-based game. Challenges increase in difficulty with each level.

Support

Each new level includes text, audio instructions, and an opportunity to practice. Some numbers are hard to connect, and additional settings for speed could help support younger learners who may become discouraged if losing is the only way to slow the pace.

What's it about?

In THE LAND OF VENN - NUMERIC STORMS, the Land of Venn is being invaded by evil Bokkenriders who are trying to drink the magic pools and destroy the land. To save the special liquid, kids must act fast to make given sums by pairing or grouping numbers. There are three worlds (fruits, sweets, and shipwrecked treasures), with 10 levels in each world. Before a level that introduces a new sum, kids get to practice grouping numbers before actually playing. Kids have to complete a level to move on and must save one world to unlock the next one. They use their fingers to connect numbered Bokkenriders to make a sum. If kids don't move quickly enough, the Bokkenriders will make it to the magic pool and drink it up. If this happens, kids can try the level again. As they play, kids earn points, stars, and magic powers that they buy from the store with in-game currency.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Though the initial rapid pace may be overwhelming for younger kids, this game is an excellent and insanely engaging way for many kids to practice and build essential math facts. Kids likely will be so engrossed in the quest to save the Land of Venn, they won't even realize they're learning math. The narration is fun and quirky, but it may be difficult for some kids to understand; however, this does not distract from the game and the thrill of fighting the invaders. Also, at times, it's difficult to make the connections among numbers either because they simply won't connect or because the numbers are hard to see with all the other interactive graphics on the screen. Being able to choose a difficulty level in the settings would make the game even more accessible for kids who might get frustrated losing repeatedly until the pace slows. Even with these minor issues, this is a fantastic tool for practicing basic addition facts and fluency.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the importance of knowing addition facts. Discuss real-world examples of using addition.

  • Have kids practice addition facts using flash cards before playing the game.

  • Remind kids that even if they don't succeed the first time, they can always try again. Ask them what strategies they use to work through frustration.
