Mickey's Shapes Sing-Along by Disney Imagicademy

Mickey's Shapes Sing-Along by Disney Imagicademy gallery

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Mickey's Shapes Sing-Along is part of the Imagicademy suite of apps featuring Disney Clubhouse characters teaching preschool concepts. Unlike the other apps, though, Mickey's Shapes Sing-Along does not include in-app purchases or connect to the Imagicademy parental control features. Kids can watch videos of songs about shapes, sing along karaoke-style and record their voices, or play games with shapes. The song recordings can be saved and accessed in-app, but there are no sharing options.

What kids can learn

Engagement

Not only are the songs catchy, kids get to record themselves singing them and listen to themselves again and again.

Learning Approach

The karaoke style is a bit of a mismatch with the target age since most shape-learning preschoolers aren't reading independently. Still, the songs teach the attributes of the shapes and the games give kids practice identifying and forming them.

Support

Non-readers may need some extra support because instructions and song titles are written. Kids can figure out how to play pretty intuitively, though.

What's it about?

Kids choose from three options: sing, watch, or play in MICKEY'S SHAPES SING-ALONG BY DISNEY IMAGICADEMY. They can watch animated music videos of The Square Song, The Circle Song, and Count by Tens. The play option includes games with the shape songs playing in the background. Kids tap the shapes or trace the shapes while the songs play. The sing option is the real show stopper, though. Kids can sing along karaoke-style to songs about squares, circles, triangles, ovals, rhombus, rectangles, hexagons, and counting by tens. They can record their singing and save it in-app to replay.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Mickey's Shapes Sing-Along by Disney Imagicademy hits some high notes with its singing features but falls a little short in other areas. As expected of Disney songs, the shapes tunes are really catchy, so kids and parents alike will be singing them in no time. The lyrics are simple, repetitive, and fact-filled to help kids not only recognize the shapes but also understand their attributes: "One, two, three, four straight sides make a square. Four equal straight sides, four equal corners." The games give kids a little hands-on practice identifying and drawing shapes, but they aren't the real stand-outs. Giving kids the option to to record their own singing is the main attraction, so once kids have heard the songs a few times, they'll feel ready to sing along, which will help cement the facts in their minds. Unfortunately, since kids learning shapes are usually pre-readers, the words on the screen won't help them; instead, they'll need to hear the song many, many times to learn it. The app recommends headphones when it opens, and parents will likely agree the tenth time through the songs. The breadth of shapes covered is impressive for a preschool app, too, using both diamond and rhombus and including hexagons. Pentagons and octagons are notably absent, though.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about shapes they encounter each day. Ask kids to find circles or triangles or squares as you drive, eat, or play.

  • Give kids a package of chenille sticks and have them form different shapes with them or make the corners of each shape and have your kid play connect the dots, naming the shapes as they go.
