A little like a cross between Missile Command and a rhythm music game, BeatDefense offers some potential. That potential is a little too easily squandered though, and some overly-intrusive adverts mean you're going to have a dilemma on your hands.

beat3Missiles are raining down on your city and there's only one way you can stop them – by, well, tapping on them. It's a little trickier than that though. You can only tap on them when they fall into your reticule, and timing really is imperative here. Time it badly and you entirely miss the shot, and some damage is inflicted to your city. Time it well, however, and you gain a perfect score for that particular missile. Hurrah!

Help is provided by the music of BeatDefense. Besides having a catchy beat to it, small sound effects are offered to indicate just when a missile is coming, giving you a moment to react accordingly.

beat1Once you get into the rhythm of things, BeatDefense is quite fun even if it is pretty simple. You can't help but wish for a bit more depth, or at least power-ups, but it's kind of entertaining. There is, however, a critical flaw and it relates to the in-game adverts. Full screen video ads feature here, which would be fine, but they kick in during a session, messing up your chances for success and getting in the way. It's intensely irritating and doesn't actually endear you towards paying $0.99 to remove them.

That's a shame as BeatDefense does offer some potential. It's got that retro vibe to it that's kind of appealing, and while it's not exactly complex, it's quite fun to play for five minutes. At least, until those pesky adverts get in the way and prove annoying. Maybe with a bit of tweaking, BeatDefense could be a more worthwhile proposition.
