Google released the first Android 11 preview this week, and it looks like the user interface could be getting a splash of colour, with these new-look rainbow Quick Settings icons.

While this initial preview is for developers’ eyes only, XDA Developers’ Mishaal Rahman has detailed some of the updates he spotted while playing around with the new software.

Rahman discovered a new class titled ‘QSColorController’ in SystemUI while exploring the Android 11 system dump from the Google Pixel 4.

The class allows the user to override the colour of the tiles in the Quick Settings panel. Rahman was able to adjust the colour of each tile individually using debug commands referenced in the code.

You can check out the changes made to the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Auto-rotate and Battery Saver above. The icons have changed from their default blue to yellow, red and green.

It’s unclear what these new colourful settings will be used for as of now. They could allow Android users to customise their own Quick Settings or developers to create custom themes.

XDA Developers tested the feature on the Android 11 emulator in Android Studio, so it doesn’t seem to be a Pixel-exclusive either.

This isn’t the only news we’ve heard regarding Android 11 since the preview dropped.

So far, we know there will be new chat bubbles for the messaging apps, a rumour we’d heard back before Android 10 dropped. Android users will also be able to see more than the last message when replying to chats from notifications and send images directly from this tab.

There will be new permission options and features for foldables along with updates to improve 5G. Google is also expected to provide support for digital driver’s licenses and to introduce a BiometricPrompt API that recognises different levels of security for apps and services.
