Flop Rocket is an arcade game in which players must pilot a poorly made rocket through a cave in the hope of making it to space. With its ridiculous premise, accessible gameplay, oddball charm, and smart upgrade system, Flop Rocket is a blast.

The easiest way to describe Flop Rocket is probably as a cross between Lunar Lander and Jetpack Joyride. Players can tilt the point of their rocket using the left side of the screen and then tap the right side of the screen to turn the throttle on or off. Players must use these controls to avoid stalagmites, space ducks, and more, while gathering fuel and trying to go the full 5 kilometers it takes to get to space.

floprocket (7)As players inevitably destroy their spacecraft over and over again, they’ll also be earning coins that they can spend on upgrades that can improve the ship’s thrust, agility, magnetism, and fuel, with the option to unlock eight other upgrade paths if they pay $2.99. All of these upgrades make it easier to play, though Flop Rocket is consistently challenging in all the best ways.

Despite its difficulty, Flop Rocket remains replayable and fun because there’s always something to do on any given run. Even when players know that a session won’t end in making it to space, they are earning coins to buy a new upgrade, completing missions, or otherwise practicing their ability to land on refuel pads.

floprocket (5)Flop Rocket relies on having players pay $2.99 to “Butter Up.” As mentioned previously, this unlocks additional upgrade paths but the purchase also acts as a coin doubler and removes ads. It also features a premium currency, called Juice, but this can be easily purchased using coins.

Flop Rocket is a fantastic package. While its free version may not be an ideal experience due to its use of ads and locked upgrades, the asking price is modest and the free version provides more than enough content for players to decide if they want to foot the bill. Anyone looking for another great arcade experience for their phone should seek out Flop Rocket immediately.
